Wedding Cake Tip: How to Cut the Cake Together

Cutting the wedding cake is undoubtedly one of the most iconic and eagerly anticipated moments of any wedding reception. It symbolises the couple's first task together as a married couple and is often seen as a fun event! Here are a few tips to make this moment even more memorable.

Making it an Event: Countdown to the Cut

Instead of simply cutting the cake without much fanfare, consider turning it into a mini-event. This can help build excitement and anticipation amongst your guests, marking the occasion with even more significance.

Start by gathering everyone's attention and announcing that the cake-cutting ceremony is about to begin. You could have the DJ or best man make an announcement, or even use a handheld microphone to address your guests directly.

To create a sense of anticipation, count down from ten with your partner, just like the countdown to the New Year's Eve ball drop. Encourage your guests to join in and count down with you. This will create a sense of unity and excitement among everyone present.

Feeding the Cake to Each Other

Once the countdown reaches zero, it's time to cut the cake! While the traditional way is for the couple to cut a small slice together, why not take it a step further and feed each other that first piece?

Feeding each other a bite of cake is an endearing gesture that symbolises the mutual support and commitment of the newlyweds. It also adds a touch of playfulness and romance to the moment.

How to do it

Have the taller person stood behind and the shorter person closest to your guests, that way everyone will be able to see you both. Then traditionally, place both hands on the knife and choose a place on the cake to cut. You don't need to cut all the way through the cake, the second or base tier is the best to cut a small slice out for you both.

Choose the right utensils

Bring your own or check the venue has one ready. Make sure the knife is sharp enough to glide through the cake easily, ensuring a clean cut.

Have a designated person for cake distribution

After the ceremonial first slice, have a designated person take over the task of slicing and serving the rest of the cake to the guests. This will allow you to enjoy the rest of the evening without distraction. This is usually your co-ordinator who cuts it themselves or hands over to your caterers.

Remember, cutting the cake together is not just a tradition but an opportunity to create fun memories. By turning it into an event with a countdown and feeding each other, you add an extra flair of excitement and love to your wedding day. Make it uniquely yours and enjoy every moment of this sweet celebration!
