From Lens to LinkedIn: Tips for a Perfect Headshot Session

Headshots...why must we have them taken and what makes them so important?

The benefits of having an updated headshot extend far beyond a LinkedIn profile.

A fresh headshot can boost your professional image, enhance your personal brand, and make a lasting impression on potential clients or employers.

It's an investment in yourself and your future success.

My approach goes beyond just capturing headshots; it's about revealing the real You or Your Brand in every image. Embrace your individuality and uniqueness as we create headshots that tell your story with creativity, warmth, and authenticity.

Through a guided process, we'll uncover what makes you special and translate it into images that resonate with your audience. Your headshots will not just be pictures; they'll be reflections of your personality, aspirations, and identity.

At my photography studio, I prioritise building confidence during photoshoots. My expertise lies in creating a comfortable and encouraging environment where you can be your true self in front of the camera.

Say goodbye to awkward poses and fake smiles – with me, every shot will radiate authenticity and confidence.

“I was looking for a Devon-based photographer who could create elegant, contemporary images to update my acting headshot portfolio.

Emma’s diverse and captivating work along with glowing reviews and a studio in Plymouth made her the perfect choice. Emma was instantly enthusiastic, taking time to understand my specific brief and on the day, along with trusted MUA, Gem, created a relaxed, efficient and inspiring atmosphere to capture a great variety of images.

I was delighted to receive my selection in super quick time and would absolutely recommend Emma to actors in the South West or anyone seeking evocative portraits and a pleasant time creating them!”

“I was looking for a simple and stylish headshot to use as my author headshot. I loved the look of Emma's work on Instagram and she was prompt and helpful from the moment I contacted her. We discussed backdrops and reference photos so I felt confident that I would come away with images that suited my work and personality.
I've never had a professional headshot taken before so I was slightly nervous but Emma was great putting me at ease. The shoot was really enjoyable and I came away feeling confident and excited.
The finished photos were delivered swiftly and look fantastic, I'm thrilled with the results. I would highly recommend Emma to any creative professional looking for a headshot, or to anyone looking for a lovely image to cherish!”

Here are 10 tips to help you achieve a perfect headshot session:

  1. Choose the Right Outfit
Wear something that complements your personality and aligns with the purpose of your headshot. Stick to solid colours and avoid busy patterns to keep the focus on your face.

  2. Focus on Grooming
Take time to prepare with neat hair, clean skin, and well-groomed nails. These small details can make a big difference in the final shot.

  3. Communicate with Your Photographer
Discuss your goals, preferences, and any specific looks you have in mind. A good photographer can guide you, but clear communication helps ensure you’re on the same page.

  4. Practice Facial Expressions
Practice in front of a mirror to find a range of expressions that feel natural. Aim for friendly, relaxed, and approachable expressions for a versatile headshot.

  5. Relax and Breathe
Take a few deep breaths before each shot. Being relaxed will show in your face and body language, making your headshots look more authentic and engaging.

  6. Mind Your Posture
Good posture conveys confidence and professionalism. Sit or stand tall, slightly lean forward, and keep your shoulders back to project a strong and positive image.

  7. Use Natural Light or Soft Studio Lighting
Soft lighting is flattering and minimizes harsh shadows. If possible, natural window light or diffused studio lights work best for creating a polished look.

  8. Experiment with Angles
Don’t be afraid to try different angles to see which works best for you. A slight turn of the head or change in angle can highlight your best features.

  9. Pay Attention to Backgrounds
Choose a background that isn’t too busy and complements the purpose of the headshot. A clean, neutral background usually works well for professional headshots.

  10. Review and Give Feedback
After each set of shots, review the images and provide feedback to your photographer. Small adjustments can help get the shot just right before the session ends.
