Welcoming a new member to the family is undoubtedly a monumental event that deserves to be celebrated and cherished. As such, expecting mothers have the unique opportunity to have it documented! One of my client’s recently experienced one of these moments with a heartfelt journey, the magic of a hair and makeup styling studio session and a picture perfect location to finish her maternity photoshoot. In this blog, I talk about the essence of her extraordinary experience and the significant role played by the styling team, studio and location in creating unforgettable memories.

“We planned the shoot together so I had an idea of what would happen and what I was going to wear but I didn’t know how lovely getting my hair and makeup would be and how special the whole experience would make me feel.”

To begin her maternity photoshoot preparations, we talked about the vibe of the session we were going for, how she usually likes to dress, how she has her hair and makeup done when she typically dresses up to go out etc. Based on the vibe of the shoot the styling, backdrops and location are created from the ideas my client brings to me through her personality. Once the outfits are picked, hair and make up is brought together and then the final piece; the location, backdrop and lighting is designed.

With the styling guidance from my team, and myself she was presented with various options that would enhance her natural beauty while complementing her chosen attire for the shoot. The studio's warm and welcoming ambiance made her feel at ease, setting the stage for an unforgettable experience.

From the moment she stepped into the studio, my talented hair and makeup team impressed her with their attention to detail and dedication. Understanding that pregnancy can bring about changes in one's body, the stylist skillfully highlighted the client's stunning features, including a gorgeous glow on her bump, providing a confidence boost that elevated the entire session. It was not simply about looking good; it was about feeling exceptional – and the hair, makeup and wardrobe styling plays a pivotal role in achieving just that.

With her radiant look perfectly styled, Tonia was ready to jump under the lights and in front of the camera for her maternity photoshoot. Together we ran through different poses, outfits and backdrops. Creating dramatic, ethereal and casual yet glam portraits.

“We got the wind machine out and it literally made me feel like Beyonce, from an ordinary pregnant women to an absolute superstar!!! For the last 10 minutes of the shoot we went on the moors, and I took the plunge into the cold water, if I doubted Emmas thinking I was totally proved wrong! it was sooo much fun and so worth it because the photos are next level and something I will treasure forever.”

During her session we went through 7 outfits in 2 hours. We even created a wet look - twice! With Tonia being formally a professional athlete (Diver), this fitted in well with her relationship with water. For the last look we jumped in the car and drove 15 minutes to our sunset location. The light was fading fast but we were so fortunate to have a perfect summer’s evening. We had 10 minutes before the sun set - which was enough time with having Tonia in very, very cold water…It was well worth the quick dip as we captured some incredible images to go with her story and also a completely different vibe to her studio images. One of her favourite photos are from being dipped into water and will end up on her wall as an archival, long lasting framed print.
