What’s the Best Age for a Family Photoshoot?

Is there a certain age for having good family photos?

The answer is simple: any age is a great age!

Whether it’s maternity photos, growing family images, or generational portraits, capturing the different stages of life is important and the memories are priceless.

Maternity Photos

Maternity photos are a special way of capturing the beauty of pregnancy. This milestone is typically photographed between weeks 14 and 28, often considered the golden period for maternity photoshoots. During this time, many women experience a radiant glow, and the baby bump is beautifully rounded but not too overwhelming.

You'll likely have more energy, making it easier to engage in different poses and settings.

The 20 to 27-week period is when most women choose to have their photoshoot. The mid-pregnancy phase strikes a balance between early and late pregnancy, allowing for a comfortable and visually stunning photoshoot.

There are also opportunities for gender reveal shoots or photos with siblings or family members, which can be taken at all ages!

Growing Family Images

As the family grows, capturing the different stages is essential to telling your family story. From one child to two or more, it’s important to document the love and connection through family photos. Here are some ages for capturing this milestone:

  • Newborn: typically photographed between 5-14 days old

  • 6 months: when babies can hold their heads up and are full of smiles

  • 1 year: when babies take their first steps and become toddlers

  • 2-5 years: capturing the playful, energetic years of childhood

  • 6-12 years: documenting their primary school years

  • Teenage years: capturing the transition from child to adult (Prom time is a great moment to capture!)

No matter what stage of life you are in, capturing it through photography is a wonderful way to preserve memories for years to come.

I am honoured to help families tell their stories through my photography and would love to capture your family's milestones as well.
